Play-Based, Developmentally Appropriate Learning

At Imaginarium Play School, our curriculum is grounded in developmentally appropriate practice (DAP) and designed to support the whole child.

We operate within Kentucky licensing requirements while providing a calm, play-based environment where learning unfolds naturally through exploration and connection.

Our Learning Approach

Our curriculum is emergent, meaning learning is guided by children’s interests, questions, and developmental readiness.

Educators support learning by:

  • Observing children closely

  • Providing open-ended materials

  • Planning experiences that extend learning

  • Allowing time for deep engagement

Domains of Development

Children develop skills across all areas of early learning:

  • Social & Emotional Development

  • Language & Communication

  • Cognitive Development

  • Physical Development

  • Creative Expression

School Readiness Through Play

School readiness is built through the foundational skills children develop during play.

Children naturally develop:

  • Core strength for posture and focus

  • Fine motor strength for handwriting readiness

  • Early literacy through conversation and storytelling

  • Early math through building and problem-solving

  • Social-emotional skills for successful transitions

Daily Rhythm

Our days follow a predictable rhythm that includes:

  • Uninterrupted play

  • Small-group and individual experiences

  • Outdoor exploration

  • Meals, rest, and caregiving routines

Guidance & Behavior Support

We use positive guidance strategies aligned with Kentucky regulations.

We:

  • Support emotional regulation

  • Model respectful communication

  • Teach social skills through real experiences

  • View behavior as communication

How Learning Unfolds Through Play

Creative Expression

Children explore creativity through open-ended art, sensory materials, music, and imaginative play. These experiences support fine motor development, self-expression, and confidence while allowing children to process their ideas and emotions through play.

Rhythm, Music & Movement

Music, rhythm, and movement are woven into daily experiences at Imaginarium Play School. Through songs, instruments, and active play, children build coordination, listening skills, language development, and joy in shared experiences.

Gross Motor & Active Play

Daily movement supports children’s physical development, balance, coordination, and body awareness. Active play indoors and outdoors helps children build strength, release energy, and develop focus and confidence.

Language & Communication

Language develops through meaningful interactions, storytelling, play, and conversation. Children are supported in building vocabulary, expressing their needs, and developing early literacy skills through everyday experiences.

Early Math Through Play

Early math concepts emerge naturally through play. Children explore counting, sorting, patterns, and problem-solving using hands-on materials, games, and real-life experiences that make learning meaningful and engaging.

Outdoor Exploration

Outdoor play is an important part of our daily rhythm. Time spent outside supports gross motor development, curiosity, connection with nature, and a sense of wonder about the world around us.
